“Give Kids a Smile” day is an American Dental Association initiative to provide free oral health care to at-risk children and to raise awareness of the number of children with unmet dental needs.
During this nationwide event, thousands of dentists and other dental volunteers across the county provide free dental services to low-income and uninsured children.
We annually participate in the Give Kids a Smile event, providing services ranging from complete treatment to screening to fluoride treatment and placing sealants, to teaching children how to hold a toothbrush properly. We have the assistance of several area dentists, hygienist, assistants, administrators, and dental supply companies to make it all happen.
Access to oral health care is a problem in Michigan, where nearly 10 percent of third-graders have immediate dental care needs with signs or symptoms of pain, infection or swelling, according to the Michigan Department of Community Health. One in four Michigan third-graders has untreated cavities.
Since it’s inception in 2003, we have participated every year. We team up with Utica Community Schools robotic Team #217, THE THUNDERCHICKENS to help make this day happen. The Thunderchicken team members serve as advocates to help comfort the children and make it a fun day for them. We bring in clowns, and other activities to keep the children entertained while they wait for their turn! Our next annual Give Kids a Smile is February 17th 2012!
